Learn to Row

Maine Coast Rowing’s classes are meant to introduce basic technique and rowing skills, equipment familiarity, and safety awareness on the river. New rowers are encouraged to take our learn to row classes multiple times until they feel comfortable launching and rowing. For rowers returning to the sport, learn to row classes serve as a review of skills and prepare you to move on to our recreational or team programs.

There are two types of rowing: sweep rowing and sculling.

  • Sweep rowing involves using one oar per rower so you are always part of a team boat.
  • Sculling involves using two oars per rower which allows you to row in a single (a one-person boat) or in a team boat.

There is not an advantage to learning one or the other first and most of our rowers eventually learn to row in both types of boats.
